Sodalite

Deep blue with white veining is the most commonly seen form though it appears in a huge range of color possibilities form dark blue, grey, green, yellow, white, pale red, lavender, blue, and colorless.

Sodium aluminum silicate with chlorine (Na4Al3Si3O12Cl). An igneous plutonic mineral. This means it was formed from a molten mass deep below the earth’s surface. This molten mass or magma cooled very slowly and became solid rock. Many different kinds of minerals were formed this way in different parts of the world, but just the right combination of the element sodium, aluminum, silica, oxygen and chlorine had to be present for this beautiful blue stone to be formed.

  • A stone of logic, rationality, and efficiency. Helpful for work in groups and stimulates thought. A stone that is good for healing breaches in communication. a stone of truth, and brings this to all communications. Can help end arguments or other disagreements. Particularly useful for honesty of emotions. Increases intelligence, knowledge and learning, and can unite the logical with the spiritual. Physically beneficial for the glands, digestive system, relieving insomnia, and decreasing calcium deficiency. It can also be useful for quicker healing of head colds. Associated with the throat and brow chakras.
  • Commonly seen as a healing tool and is believed to be equally powerful whether dealing with emotional issues or physical complaints. Wear to dispel both fear and guilt. Used to calms turmoil. Facilitates the arrival at logical conclusions in difficult situations. Promotes a group consciousness and encourages a communal work environment. Used for meditation purposes. If treated with respect it is believed to invoke wisdom.
  • Clearing and balancing mental disorders; filling the doubts, fears and anxieties with white light and transformation. Throat chakra stone- aids in communication and self-expression. Eases subconscious fear and guilt. Stabilizes mental and emotional processes, PMS, cramps, clears old patterns, migraines and headaches, and wisdom.  Gives confidence to those who are shy or introvert, allowing assurance and free expression when with others. Therefore particularly suited to teachers, actors and performers. Also a meditation stone. Can be used on computers and TVs to absorb emissions.
  • General communication and writing stone. Logic, ideas and truth. Balances body energy levels via thyroid, pituitary, lymph, and other glands, insomnia, neck, mouth, hearing, blood sugar, etc. Cooling and drawing for infections, burns, sinus inflammations, high blood pressure, etc
  • Vibrates to the #4. Element of Water. Planet of Venus. Astrological sign of Sagittarius.
  • Absorbs the energies from the aura that are extraneous and may be clouding perception or mental functioning. It helps repair damage done by severe trauma. It helps relieve allergies.   • Natural Healers use Sodalite to increase the ability to trust one's self and trust others, for nervous disorders, and stomach disorders related to stress.
  • Sodalite is thought to help one make "logical decisions".
  • Sodalite is thought to be a gemstone of Aquarius, the Astrological sign associated with fellowship and unemotional humanitarianism.
  • Healing Properties: Stress. Attention deficit disorder (ADD). 

Scientific Properties:

  • Composed of a Sodium Aluminum Chlorine Silicate. The white streaks are calcite runners.
  • Sodalite is formed in alkaline igneous and plutonic rocks with low silica content.
  • Sodalite is very similar in appearance to Lapis Lazuli, however Sodalite is lacking in the golden pyrite flecks characteristic of Lapis. Sodalite tends to have a brushed denim appearance whereas Lapis tends to polish to a stronger sheen.
  • Found in Canada, Brazil and South Africa. 5.5- 6.5 on the Moh's Hardness Scale

Buyer Beware! Sodalite is often used as a substitute for Lapis Lazuli. Lapis will always have golden flecks in it--Sodalite is characterized by white runners or streaks. 

Owner Warning! While Sodalite is a durable gemstone, the calcite runners are not.  Use caution in cleaning this mineral, as the calcite runners may be easily dissolved by some solvents.
