Moss Agate

Composed of Chalcedony (extremely finely crystalline quartz--called cryptocrystalline). Contains visible impurities in the form of dendrite (a branching figure or marking, resembling moss or a shrub or tree) shapes that resemble moss. Agate in general, gets its name from the river Achates in Sicily, where it is said to have been discovered. The Moss Agate variety gets its name not from the green "moss-like" inclusions, but rather from the Arabian seaport of Mocha (Al Mukna) on the Red Sea Coast of Yemen where it first became popular.

Moss Agate differs from Tree Agate in that the background is generally clear, whereas in Tree Agate, the background is distinctly white. Much of modern day Agate comes from Brazil, Sri Lanka, Africa, Mexico and Maine, Utah and Colorado.
