Jasper
Jasper is a term which generally refers to opaque semi-precious gemstones, usually quartz based. This term is sometimes interchangeable with Agate, however Agates tend to be clearer and/or banded.

Jasper is opaque quartz usually red, yellow, brown, green, or a mixture of these colors. When arrowheads were made, jasper was the favorite material to use in regions where deposits existed. There are many, many kinds and colors throughout the world. The green jaspers, when of a uniform light shade, are often known as prase, and the darker green as plasma.
Basanite is a velvety-black type of jasper. When plasma contains bright red spots it is commonly called bloodstone or heliotrope. Basanite can be used for scrying; its velvety blackness gently draws your attention deep within, its softness’ allowing you to meld with its energy field, which is conducive to deep states of relaxation and insight. Floating on the cushion of support you will quickly find yourself transported to the hidden realms, as all veils of separation fall away, revealing the core of hidden knowledge, which is a prerequisite for spiritual growth, and understanding. Much petrified wood (fossil) is jasper, the previously existing wood fiber having been replaced molecule by molecule by silica in the form of jasper.
- Yellow jasper aids digestion and stomach disorders and will gently ease stomach problems. It should be placed over the area of pain until all painful sensations cease. It is energizing, uplifting and sustaining to the whole body. It helps with the release of toxins from the liver and large intestine. It will support you during the releasing process by gently stabilizing your energy field, easing the discomfort normally associated with toxin release; it is excellent as a gemstone essence. Jasper was often mentioned as bringing rain by American Indians. The word for Jasper in some American Indian cultures meant "rain-bringer."
The ancient Aztecs favored all green stones, including green jasper.
The Japanese of the Iron Age buried jasper amulets called Magatama with their dead.
Jasper is mentioned as being the Patron Stone to Counselors and Therapists.
Jasper is considered an overall healing gemstone by Natural Healers, thought especially important for women during childbirth--holding a piece of jasper in the hand during childbirth is said to help relieve pain and guard the mother and child. Other protective/healing effects are determined by the color of the stone:
- Yellow: Solar Plexus, Intelligence, Concentration.
- Red: Protection. Beauty and grace to young women. Bronchials, fevers and lower Chakras. Defensive magic. Health, rebirth, freshness in ideas.
- Brown: Grounding, centering, self-esteem.
- Green: General healer. Stomach problems, hallucinations, restful sleep.
