Howlite Howlite is a soft, opaque snowy white semi-precious gemstone with pastel gray streaks. Composed of Hydrous Calcium Beryllium Silicate. Formed in desert borax deposits as a secondary mineral. usually identified by cauliflower like nodules growing in desert clays. Howlite takes dye well and is often used to imitate other, more expensive stones, such as Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli. Much of the “white turquoise” on the market today is actually Howlite.
